From the notoriously right-wing CNN:
Clearly Cambridge police office Kelly King isn't really black. Like Clarence Thomas isn't really black...
Now excuse me, I must go profile the negro driving a UPS truck through the neighborhood.

Aw, isn't that sweet. Cops standing up for cops. Never saw that before.

Aw, isn't that sweet. Democrats standing up for Democrats. Never saw that before, Mark. Especially from you.

Your comment above, Mark, would be an excellent example of what I mean by "the mask slipping".
You're certainly bright enough to figure it out from there.

Want to bet?

I'm so confused. Are we trying to determine if Mark is or is not bright or if he is an asshole?
Posted by: DonnieDarko | July 28, 2009 at 04:20 PM
I'm voting for moderately bright, extreme asshole.

Say Dennis why haven't you posted the audiotapes you thought were going to ruin Gates' day yesterday? H'mmm? It couldn't be because you don't hear Gates being an asshole on them but you do hear the cop saying "he's still being uncooperative, keep 'em coming." Meaning more squad cars to quell the horrible threat to the community of a loudmouth 58 year old professor who walks with a cane berating a cop who wouldn't get out of his house so he could go to bed.
C'mon Dennis. Post them here and let's hear 'em.

Mark-
Come on, you're not serious. You know full well those tapes in no way support anything Gates has alleged. You know full well absolutely NOBODY, from the gov. of MA to the mayor of Cambridge to the President has challenged Cambridge's decision to forego an investigation of Crowley. I never question your intelligence, don't question mine...
Beyond that, and I'm repeating myself, you once again demonstrate you know absolutely nothing about police protocols and procedures. Crowley's call was standard operating procedure for investigation of a possible felony under those circumstances... Ask any cop, if you know one, and you'll find out that cops don't just wing it when they are out there. They are trained to respond to different calls in different ways, and when responding to a possible felony (and a B.I.P. is considered one of the most serious calls they can get)cops are required to gather a whole lot more information about what is going on. It's also worth noting that Gates wasn't being an asshole on just any sort of call, he was being an asshole on a felony call, and on a felony call, cops are going to do what they have to do without much fooling around, largely because there is always the presumption that a citizen could be in danger.
Why can't you just admit the fact that Gates was an asshole and Obama made a mistake in defending him? Do you really think the "Oh, Crowley was obviously a stupid, racist rogue cop" defense is going to play well with white independents in 2010.
Why this near pathological need to keep digging this particular hole deeper?
Posted by: Dennis the Peasant | July 28, 2009 at 04:57 PM
Um, Dennis I'm not questioning your intelligence, though I could, there's a lot of libertarians who are not pleased with cops throwing their weight around. You want to lose them too?
Once Gates showed his ID and proved it was his house, and that there was no burglary in progress, cops are trained to leave him alone. If you don't know those details of the case, or those procedures, you should.
Now where's the audiotape? C'mon, let's hear if it supports your take or mine. Sure Gates overreacted, he was sick, tired, and already irritated enough about having to damage his own door to get in. But arresting a man in his own home because he's in a shitty mood made shittier because the cops won't leave him alone when it's clear to everybody on site they were sent there erroneously? I'm not the one in the hole here and neither is Obama. And anyone who has ever dealt with a dickhead cop knows it.

Having experienced this very thing myself I can understand Gates' initial annoyance with the police.
In my case, the Sheriff's office received a call about suspicious persons in the area. When they drove by my place they saw the garage door going up and down at random.
They did the same thing to me, show ID, come outside, and had my wife come outside as well. It was very frustrating because I didn't understand any of it. It was explained later that they had to make sure no one was being held under duress. SOP.
The simple fact is Gates misunderstood the cop's motivation, and the cop made no effort to explain why he had to do what he did initially.
This whole thing needs to die quietly, that is if some people can let it.

Mark-
Just when have you heard me taking Libertarians seriously here. I read Balko's post yesterday, and you know what? He doesn't know a fucking thing about police procedure either. There's a time and a place for everything, and trying to engage in a deep (for Balko) philosophical discussion about the limits of police power with a cop during a felony call isn't one of them.
As for the tapes, you're starting to sound like a birther: "Dennis won't produce the tapes on his site... Perhaps they don't exist... Sounds like a conspiracy... What could he be hiding...What is he afraid of?" Get serious. Those tapes don't substantiate one thing Gates has claimed, and they positively prove that there was no racial profiling involved, unless you're going to argue (and you probably will) that a description of "kinda Hispanic" and "I don't know, I didn't see him" fits the bill.
And I ask you for a second time, where is the outrage over the fact that Sgt. Crowley keeps his job and there is going to be no internal or external investigation of his conduct? Where's Sharpton and Jackson and the Congressional Black Caucus?
Posted by: Dennis the Peasant | July 28, 2009 at 07:32 PM
Once again Dennis the cop knew very early on there was no felony. I know the tapes exist. I've heard them. I'm holding your feet to the fire because you're making an ass of yourself. The citizen report wasn't racist. I doubt the the cop's reaction was either. It was a stupid overreaction to a provocation he easily could have defused by being the bigger man and walking away. He chose to escalate the situation and now he's getting a trip to the WH for a photo op beer with the president. Not a bad result for him but what the hell are you getting out of it? What the hell are conservatives getting out of it? Ginning up white resentment? Is that all you got? As I said in another thread all this is leading to is a bunch of smart mouthed white punks using the Gates defense in the months to come, "if a n*gger can do it, why can't I?" which is going to make life harder for cops all over the country. Of course that won't make it on the news. It won't be black punks doing it, most of them already know better than to get in a cop's face and know they're as likely to get the same shake as a Harvard professor as they are to follow in Obama's shoes. You're doing your part along with Limbaugh, Beck and Dobbs. Congratulations, you're in such august company.

"You're doing your part along with Limbaugh, Beck and Dobbs. Congratulations, you're in such august company. "
Yes Dennis, think what you are missing you could be up there with Mark Garrity.
Now come on,don't pull that "who??" stuff with me.This is your chance for fame, fortune, call centres and weekend booths. Who needs money?
Posted by: PeterUK. | July 28, 2009 at 08:27 PM
Exacty where on those tapes is there evidence pinpointing when Sgt. Crowley knew (or should have known) he was not dealing with a possible felony?
And Mark, there is protocol that specifically deals with that sort of situation. Do you know what that protocol is?
No, you don't.
That's going to make pointing out said evidence somewhat difficult, don't you think?
Or don't you?

Why don't you post the audiotapes Dennis and let us decide for ourselves? We're all adults here, except for Petey, we can handle it.
Posted by: markg8 | July 28, 2009 at 09:06 PM
Dennis, post some Village People for Marky instead.
