Evidently Josh Marshall wants to be Charles Johnson when he grows up. What else could explain his posting this bit of sludge from TPM drone Zach Roth, who evidently wants to be Andrew Sullivan when he grows up:
The Massachusetts man charged this week with stockpiling weapons after saying he feared an imminent "Armageddon" appears to have been active in the Tea Party movement, and saw Sarah Palin, who he said is on a "righteous 'Mission from God,'" as the only figure capable of averting the destruction of society.
Ah, the classic Sullivan factual cherry-pick, complete with hedge, which leads straight into the classic Charles Johnson damnation via six degrees of seperation linkage:
But it appears that Girard had lately found a community with which to share some of his growing fears. A "Greg Girard," listing his location as Manchester, Mass., has a personal page on the "Patriots of America" online network, a popular site affiliated with the Tea Party movement. The phone number listed on the page is the same as the number listed on the website of Girard's consulting firm, which appears to have been run out of his home.
So there you have it. Johnson uses the six degrees to slander his personal enemies as racists, and Marshall uses the same technique to slander the political opposition of the Democrats who fund his "news" operation.
This is how bad it is in Obamaland today: It's to the point where a Ivy League edjamacated professional astroturfer like Marshall must spend his time trying to defame by suggesting linkage between a man with obvious mental health issues and the opposition. This the sort of thing one has to do when you're paid to use the news to sing the praises of incompetents and amateurs, but cannot. Marshall's not only a media whore, he's now he's responding to tough political times by becoming a media whore on the level of Charles Johnson.
Shoot for the moon, I always say.
I've long said that the main difference between conservative wackjobs and liberal wackjobs is that liberals elect theirs to public office.
Same goes for the agitated electorate: liberals encourage their hypocritical, hate mongering, even violent wackjobs, but conservatives seek to denounce, marginalize or purge their wackjobs.
Obviously, the liberal loon toons can't see that distinction or difference, and write accordingly.

A female Harvard grad just killed three people at Hunstville. Wonder what her political affiliations are?
Posted by: richard mcenroe | February 12, 2010 at 07:55 PM
I was about to wonder that very thing, richard.
Posted by: Randy Rager | February 12, 2010 at 08:18 PM
Johnson is bat shit deranged. Sullivan is clearly demented. Marshall apparently likes riding bareback. Tell me something new.
I'd much rather hear about Richard's Harvard grad who got stabby.
OT, I tried to scrape a sentence or two last week with no luck. I would have given the normal props of full attribution and link backs, but your wicked words refused to leave home.

Daphne-
It took me ten minutes to figure out that you were saying you weren't able to link to this site.

Is that what she was saying?
Posted by: Lefty | February 12, 2010 at 10:17 PM
Geez Dennis,
C'mon, everyone knows that right wing nut cases are deranged homicidal nazis, whereas leftie nut cases are simply doing it to advance society. The ends justifying the means and all.
Perhaps Janet Napolitano is now feeling justified in the characterizations of just who the security threats were.
Posted by: Tim P | February 12, 2010 at 11:12 PM
Doesn't seem like there's any degree of separation. Girard has a personal page on the "Patriots of America" online network where he fit right in with what can only be called his peers. You do recall that there were quite a few teabaggers who thought bringing firearms to town hall meetings was the thing to do last year.
And where was the cherry picking Dennis? Was the guy stockpiling weapons for some other reason than he thinks "Armageddon" and martial law are right around the corner?
His own wife said he had recently told her: "Don't talk to people, shoot them instead," and "it's fine to shoot people in the head because traitors deserve it."
Yeah he's got issues. But we've all heard the same kind of eliminationist crap from the right for years.
But I tell you what, make it easy on the rest of us and the feds. Turn in the freaks who start building their own private arsenals and talk about shooting people in the head.
Maybe that way no more cops will get shot to death like those three did in Pittsburgh last April. Maybe no more doctors who perform abortions will get shot in the face in the foyer of their church on Sunday morning while their wives are upstairs singing in the choir. Maybe no more tattoo parlors will get firebombed for refusing to ink a guy up with a swastika on his arm and a picture of Obama in the crosshairs.
You guys haven't cornered the market on nuts but you do seem to have cornered the market on nuts with guns.

"You guys haven't cornered the market on nuts"
No, Lefty, but you have cornered the market on my nuts on your tonsils.
Posted by: David | February 13, 2010 at 01:45 AM
We corner the market on nuts with guns, because we corner the market on gun owners.
Liberals corner the market on elected nuts with dumb political ideas, because liberals corner the market on dumb political ideas.
Simple case of ratio of nuts to base population. Doesn't help the dumb political ideas, though.
Posted by: just passin by | February 13, 2010 at 03:15 AM
Hmmm... when tonsils go away, the only nuts that will do are pistacio.

Nuts with guns-- magnum scrotum.
Surfeit, do you prefer red or green?
Posted by: all mons | February 13, 2010 at 04:14 AM
Red or green is not my scene as long as they're in ice cream.
Posted by: Surfeit | February 13, 2010 at 04:15 AM
Fine, as long as your P can
Posted by: all mons | February 13, 2010 at 04:19 AM
I can as long as the pie is hot.

I can only offer endless Texas pecan pi at a tea party, Surfeit... One lump or two?

Damned few, anyhow, what with the general success of the "long march through the institutions".

Famous lefty gun owners:
Lolita Lebron (Puerto Rican Terroist Leader, shot up Congress)
Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola (Puerto Rican terrorists, tried to assassinate Truman)
Leon Czolgoz (Shot McKinley)
Lee Harvey Oswald
Squeaky Fromme (tried to shoot Ford)
Sarah Jane Moore (tried to shoot Ford)
Senator Ted Kennedy (D)(threw tantrum when Capitol cops wouldn't let his bodyguard into the Senate with two loaded, concealed MAC-11 submachine guns)
Carl Rowan (crusading antigun DC columnist, shot teenaged boy for swimming in his pool... with unregistered pistol)
Senator Jim Webb (D), Marine veteran 'forgot' where he left loaded handgun his aide got caught smuggling into Capitol.
Senator Soles (D) antigun crusader shoots intruder with unregistered handgun
We haven't cornered any market, lefty old boy. And before you waste our time trotting out Tim McVeigh, want a list of all the great lefty bombers?
Posted by: richard mcenroe | February 13, 2010 at 11:34 AM
Webb isn't a leftist; he just sold out to the Democratic machine. "Born Fighting" is an excellent history of the Scots-Irish influence on America, even if a little high on the Scots-Irish. Damn shame he sold his soul.
But hell, if you can get soros and company to kick out $500,000 a year for me, I'll parrot the same delusional crap they do.
It's funny Richard, how the libs think the right to private gun ownership is a bad thing, but say nothing when their own pols get caught stepping off the party plantation. Liars and hypocrites, each and every one of them.
Posted by: just passin by | February 13, 2010 at 12:06 PM
You guys read too much NRA claptrap. I know lots of lefty hunters. Now that most of their natural predators are gone there's too many deer and geese in this country. If you guys with guns spent more time hunting instead of drinking beer, watching football and pretending Obama wants to confiscate your guns it'd cut down on the number of car accidents. So during hunting season turn off the tv and go shoot something with four legs or wings. The life, or the front end of the car, you save might be your own.

Marshall uses the same technique to slander the political opposition of the Democrats who fund his "news" operation.
I'm not all that familiar with TPM but I was under the impression he's one of the original reader-funded political news sites. Did something happen to his business model or are you just joking about the funding?
Posted by: ema | February 13, 2010 at 12:54 PM
as a horrible lefty, i have to agree that TPM has gone downhill in direct proportion to its becoming better-known. Marshall used to be the source for all kinds of off the main screen info, but now he seems more interested in ginning up traffic with juicier headlines. damn.

From a 7/6/09 article in paidContent:
Left-of-center political news blog TalkingPointsMemo has received its first outside money, from Marc Andreessen and other angel investors, according to TC. The amount is small, and pegged between $500K to $1 million. The investment from Andreessen, his second in a blog network (the first being Business Insider), is a personal one, and not from his new $300 million investment fund.
TPM, headquartered in NYC, was founded by Joshua Marshall in 2000, and has since been funded by advertising and user contributions. Earlier this year it hired former Yahoo ad sales exec Diane Rinaldo to ramp up its ad sales efforts. It has about 15 employees, and says is profitable.
...he (Marshall) did tell paidContent that the proceeds will largely go towards doubling the size of the of 8-member editorial staff. “This is all part of a three-year plan that we began this past spring and the job postings went up last week,” he said, adding that TPM doesn’t expect to seek additional funding this year.
Marshall's got a proven product and a guy who sits on that well known lefty outfit's board, Facebook wants to invest in his biz. How nefarious!
Posted by: Lefty | February 13, 2010 at 01:16 PM
"proven product"
Ah, that's the euphemism for bullshit agitprop these days. Thanks for the heads up.
Posted by: David | February 13, 2010 at 01:45 PM
"You guys read too much NRA claptrap. I know lots of lefty hunters."
A. Bullshit
B. So What?
C. What's that got to do with my point?
"...and pretending Obama wants to confiscate your guns..."
You really need to read up on your very well-spoken professor's AG and his position on gun control...

You must be the only one on the planet. Don't you feel special? Lord knows you look special.

It gets worse. Looks like our little socialist professor killed before, but was released by the Democrat Party machine. Good going, guys.

Dennis ? Please don't use the terms "Charles Johnson", "Andrew Sullivan" and "Shoot for the moon" in the same piece again, m'kay ? Disturbing imagery, to say the least.
Oh, and this gun owner doesn't shoot animals unless absolutely necessary. I've got nothing against hunting as a sport, mind you, I just haven't engaged in it for a few decades. Paper and such will do for a target until it's necessary to shoot something/someone else.
Our new range up the road has Class III days ! The range owner tells me guys bring their M-2s. Some people have serious money, because I figure holding the trigger back on an M-2 for 30 seconds must cost about $ 500. Bet it's worth every penny, too.
Posted by: Mike C. | February 13, 2010 at 06:36 PM
Mike, make sure you're talking about the _right_ M2. My dad had to qualify on an old M2 carbine back in the day and spent half the session walking downrange to pick up the slide where it landed and reinstall it...
Posted by: richard mcenroe | February 13, 2010 at 11:13 PM
Okay, one more try, just to see if this works. Why do I have a bad feeling about this ?
Posted by: Mike C. | February 14, 2010 at 05:23 PM
The case of the murdering socialist professor just gets weirder and weirder. Turns out she was a suspect in an attempted bombing of a Harvard professor. This after murdering her brother and having the case against her dismissed by a Democrat Party machine player.
